Musicality

11 Apr

Whilst wasting away my time browsing through Youtube videos I came across one that just blew me away. It was of an 11 year old kid playing the guitar. Except, that sentence is so unbelievably inadequate to describe it. I actually started tearing up listening to his incredibly beautiful playing.  That is something that every few professional artists have done.  He’s been playing since he was 9 and his dream is to become a professional fingerstyle guitarist. Well, I think he’s already quite close to his goal.

Meet Jung, Sungha. Lean back and be taken to an enchanted and beautiful place…

Yesterday Once More

Secret Story

When the Children Cry

Can you tell I really like him? It was so hard to pick from his many videos which one to post. He’s actually composed some music as well. He composed Voyages with Ulli and it’s dedicated to Ulli Bögershausen who is his musical inspiration. You can find the rest of his videos on Youtube. This kid is just ridiculously talented. I am amazed that he’s this good after playing for 2 years. I’m totally a huge fan now. Is it weird to be a fangirl of an 11 year old boy? Well probably but, I hope you are converted too!

Out of Ideas

9 Apr

Since I can’t think of anything really interesting to post about right now I’ll share with you my day. I went to visit my buddy James since he has almost the same amount of free time as I do these days. That is to say…. waaaaaay too much free time these days. Hung out at his place chatting with him, his mom, aunt, and grandmother for most of the afternoon. The aunt & grandmother are visiting over from Japan & we chatted about his recent trip to Japan, knitting, shopping and other girly things while enjoying some of the best green tea I’ve ever had. (His mom translated ^_^) His family is so sweet! They made me feel very welcome. Some pictures with James & his mom:

Psst… James is single and a great catch. Super considerate sweet guy! Any interested applicants please contact me. ~_^

We went to watch 21. It was pretty good, and I found it to be entertaining.  Ah to be able to play in Vegas like a rock star… just for one weekend. How cool would that be? Too bad I’m not a math genius… oh well~

Got home and was greeted thus:

… and that was my day.  ^_^

Obscure Methods of Torture

7 Apr

How is everyone’s Monday going?  I went to the optometrist to pick up my glasses.  They called saying that my new lenses for my glasses were finished.  I am out $175 for lenses only…  >_<   wth…   I guess it’s because I am pretty much blind.  I’m -5.25 in my left and -6.25 in my right.  So they have to do some super double compressed with special coating lenses to prevent me from having extreme coke bottle 2″ thick glasses.  (O_O)

As part of my pick up, I had to have my eyes dialated.  I’m tellin’ you I HATE having my eyes dilated.  For those of you lovely folks who haven’t had to endure this.  It’s not fun.  I look like some freaked out cat with super dilated pupils right now.  Actually, my pupils are almost as wide as my irises.  Weird.  They put in a series of eye drops to do this.  The first of which feels like soapy water.  Not fun.  Wait 20 minutes for your eyes to fully dilate and then take you in to get the insides of your eyeballs examined with a super bright light in your eye.  More not fun.

Make sure to bring a driver… because you will turn into Dracula, have extreme light sensitivity and will not be able to drive.  Also bring a pair of dark sunglasses, or they may offer something that looks like Blu Blockers from the 80s.  Remember those?  lol  I am kind of dizzy and disoriented.  At least my vision is good enough now to read the computer screen.

Ahhh… hiding in my dark study waiting for my vision to return to normal.  O.o

Wedding Dresses, Choux & Shoes

5 Apr

I had quite a busy day today. Let me share it with you. It started off waking up at 7:45 to drive down to Costa Mesa for a sample wedding dress sales event. I met up with Gina (the Bride To Be) and June (a Bridesmaid) already at the hotel waiting in line outdoors by the ballroom at 9:20. (Doors open at 10)  Oh man it was cold out there… good thing I picked up some egg mcmuffins and other goodness to eat while we waited in line. We were stared at enviously by the other 40 or so other women there at the time. HA!

Let me pause the story here to speak about brides-to-be and the weird people they become during this whole process. Some one had brought a full length mirror and was standing in line with it. wth? It had her name scrawled across the top in sharpie on a big piece of masking tape… They did have mirrors inside btw. Just kind of overboard in my opinion. Anyway, the ballroom was full of all these women in their underwear getting in and out of wedding dresses. Now for you guys who are reading this and regretting missing such an opportunity; all was not roses. I got an unwanted eye full of someone wearing sheer white grannie panties. I can’t complain though, poor Gina got flashed a front side wedgie… O.o ew… maintenance please! Gina was smart and wore black bike short and a tube top under her clothes. Heh. Tried on about 12 different dresses and confirmed that her original choice back at the rental shop was the best bet. Lots of fun was had by all despite the random unwanted flashing. [Come to think of it… maybe all those women were just weird to begin with… :\ ]

Stopped by South Coast Plaza for some coffee at Nordies to chat and unwind. I managed to sneak in a little knitting. We then headed over to a restaurant called Old Vine Cafe per Gina’s Yelp research.

YUM!! We had the Beef and Truffle Panini with homemake potato chips, Omelet Espana with house potatoes (more starch!), the Caramel Apple French Toast and a glass of Sangria. It was all really quite tasty! I mean heck.. doesn’t it look good? mmmm… that Sangria was really good too!

Headed over to Nordstrom Rack to get some shopping in. I actually found some cute sneakers there and picked them up. They were $45. (Orig. $65.) made by Onitsuka Tiger. (This is the first time I’ve heard of this company.) Okay, not the best deal, but I’ve been looking for some cute sneakers for a while now. Why is it that non athletic sneakers without weird designs are so damn hard to find? Well, the search is over so I guess I really don’t need to rant about it any more. My fav. part about these shoes are the yellow/white stripy laces. Kya~~ \(^_^)/~

Came home and my sister had made a delicious Shepard’s Pie (ver. Chicken.0) mmMMMmmm… I guess after seeing it on Everyday Baking this afternoon had decided she had to make choux with vanilla ice cream. I’ll let the picture speak for itself. They’re SUPER easy to make. You can get the recipe here!

Well… that was my long day. I’m quite pooped. That may explain why this post is so long and goes on and on and on..

Busy Bee

3 Apr

Let’s play: What has Paula been up to this past week?

1) Sleeping
2) Being a hermit
3) Re-purposing yarn

If you guessed #3, then you’re right and you win [insert something clever here]. I am a cheapie and to feed my yarn habit I have started to re-purpose yarn from sweaters. Yes… I have a yarn habit. Don’t laugh, it’s addicting I tell you! I go into yarn stores and pet soft yarn and dream about buying them. Unfortunately, good quality yarn can get pricey and I’m not willing to spend $100+ for a project… yet. So, I did some thrift store crawling and found some sweaters with some really nice yarn that I’d knit/crochet with. I picked up 3 sweaters for a little under five bucks. I’d never done this before but read about people who did. In prep, I went out and bought some Soak which is a soap for hand knit items. [Quick tangent here: Soak is really cool, biodegradable, and no rinse… yep.. no rinse = less work. Can be used for anything delicate that you are supposed to hand wash. I got the A Scent for Celebration version from Cozy Cottage Fabrics in Brea. The smell is hard to describe, but is mild and kind of refreshing in a soapy way. ^_^ ]

Little did I realize quite how much work it takes to unravel a sweater into usable yarn. Some action shots:

This is what I started with…

Yuki likes to sit on the soft cushiony sweater pieces. I think this dog was a cat in his former life. >_<

This is the whole sweater unraveled in hanks and hanging from my Ikea lamp. It’s a tad less than 900 yards of worsted weight yarn. Composition: 69% Lambs wool, 19% Angora, 12% Nylon. It’s all kinky from being in the sweater and waiting to be washed.

Hanging to dry after a wash. Yes, those are some beanie babies… I couldn’t find anything else to evenly weigh down the yarn. I ended up taking them off out of color bleeding fear, but aren’t they cute? It looks like some freak ghetto doll carnival ride lol

Anyway… I’ve got the 2nd sweater unraveled and soaking. I still have to wind up the first batch into center pull balls. Is it a whole lot of work? um.. yeah it is. Am I regretting this? Not yet, it’s actually kind of soothing and having new yarn makes me happy. wheeeeeee~~
